Ebook About
With the publication of his Personal Memoirs in 1885, Ulysses S. Grant established what is today known as the presidential memoir. Every U.S. president since Benjamin Harrison has written one and many have turned to other forms of writing, as well. This book covers the history of works--including autobiographies, diaries, political manifestos, speeches, fiction and poetry--authored by U.S. presidents and published prior to, during or after their terms. The writing was easy for some, harder for others, with varying success, from literary comebacks and bestsellers to false starts and failures.

Book Author in Chief: The Presidents as Writers from Washington to Trump Review :

When, in a history, the first thing a reader sees is a mistake, that is the signal to stop reading. If the author is capable of making one mistake, he or she is telling you they can make a thousand.I just received the book and happened to open it to page 170, wherein it is stated that Obama enrolled at Harvard Law School and met his wife there. Ah: but two out of three isn't good enough! Obama did indeed enroll at Harvard in 1988, but he met his wife working as an intern in a Chicago law office where Michelle was already employed as a lawyer. This is not esoteric stuff: it is a well-known aspect of their "how did they meet?" story. Not to know this detail is hardly a crime, but not to check it? When writing fact, however, this kind of sloppiness is inexcusable.Picky? Well, yes: historians are in the business of being picky. Otherwise, they are amateurs.Don't bother with this book: it's amateurish.
This book covers a little know part of history – books written by Presidents, some books are written in defense of their Administrations such as Buchanan, some are written on subject that interested them such as Roosevelt, Carter, Hoover some on foreign policy – such as Nixon. Some Presidents did not write anything other than letters, articles or diary entries, and some had no desire to write at all. The book is in chronically order and each president is covered, some in depth, others few paragraphs (due dying in office and assassinations) each book written is given a little review and little history of how and why the book was written. It is common place now that a former President written book on their time in office but in the beginning, Presidents writing books was not common and maybe it was frown on as unbecoming of a former President. This book covers a little-known aspect of Presidential history and should be read to see how and why these books come about. This book is a welcomed part of understanding Presidential history and I recommend this book .
